Sundance Institute Art House Project Affiliate
Since 2006, Pickford Film Center has been a leading participant in The Sundance Institute Art House Project, an exclusive national initiative which partners Sundance Institute with only 17 art house cinemas nationwide, and brings special Sundance programming and filmmakers to Bellingham each year. In 2008, PFC staff helped spearhead the annual Art House Convergence, a national conference for independent cinemas nationwide held in mid-January of each year.

“These theatres are the unsung heroes of independent film,” says John Cooper, Director of Sundance Film Festival. “In looking for participating theatres, we were careful to invite cinemas with a good curatorial sense and a strong existing program. We’re excited to be collaborating with Pickford Film Center and others to bring new work and classics in independent film to their communities.”

Program details: Pickford Film Center shows an exclusive program of Sundance Short Films every winter curated specifically for the art house theatre project. Several other noteworthy Sundance Films are currently under consideration to make a nationwide ‘art house project tour’, including a visit from the filmmaker for an exclusive run at the 17 Sundance art house theatres.
The Art House Project unites the country’s best independent theatres to promote the growth and appreciation of cinema culture in local communities nationwide. Each of the participating theatres is acclaimed for their innovative programming and their engagement with their local arts scene. These theatres foster a cultural intersection for local and visiting filmmakers to showcase their work, for families to gather, and for daily programming to spark critical dialogue and debate.
